Methodology Element Information

Methodology element name Adoption of Sustainable Agricultural Land Management (SALM)
Methodology element category Methodology
Description

The methodology is aimed to estimate and monitor greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of project activities that reduce emissions in agriculture by applying sustainable land management practices (SALM). Carbon stock enhancement in agricultural areas in the above ground, below ground and soil carbon pool are achieved. This methodology is applicable to projects that introduce SALM into an agricultural landscape subject to conditions such that soil organic carbon would remain constant or decrease with time in absence of the project. The methodology is based on the project activity "Western Kenya Smallholder Agriculture Carbon Finance Project" in Kenya. The baseline study, monitoring and project document are being prepared by the foundation Vi Planterar trad ("We plant trees"), with assistance from the Unique Forestry Consultants Ltd. the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development as Trustee of the BioCarbon Fund.

The methdology uses input parameters to existing analytic models accepted in scientific publications for estimation of organic soil C density at equilibrium in each of the identified management practices in each of the land use categories. The applicability conditions of the methodology limit the leakage that may occur because of the project.
