Registry System

The VCS Registry System is a state of the art custodial system for Voluntary Carbon Units (VCUs), the carbon offsets generated under the VCS Program. The VCS Registry System enables the tracking of all VCUs, from issuance to retirement, and is a key part of the VCS Program which ensures that all VCUs are real, measurable, additional, permanent, independently verified, unique and traceable.

The VCS Registry System is the first multiple-registry system in the voluntary carbon market and thus provides market participants with options in respect of where to open VCS project accounts. With the ability to transfer VCUs amongst registries (a planned feature), the system will save buyers from having to open multiple accounts in different registries. The VCS Registry System consists of three international companies that are contracted to act as registries: APX Inc. (a leading environmental market infrastructure provider in North America), Caisse des Dépôts (a leading French financial institution and developer of CO2 registries in Europe), and Markit (a leading international financial markets meta-registry in the US, UK and Asia Pacific). The VCS Registries will issue, hold, transfer and retire VCUs, and will interact directly with the VCS Project Database to upload project documentation and obtain unique serial numbers for each VCU. Together, the infrastructure provided by the global registries and the database provides a transparent, robust and scalable chain of custody for the voluntary carbon market.
